‘The Slender Margin of Survival: Selected Essays’ is Kirby Sommers’ most recent book. She is a sex slave survivor, an author, and a human rights activist. In 2015 Kirby was featured in a Tedx talk "You are stronger than you think you are" for her ability to transcend obstacles. She is also the Founder of ‘Katrina Home Drive’ (KHD 2005) that helped tens of thousands of displaced hurricane survivors find new homes and resources across the country.

All she ever wanted to do when she was a little girl was to write. “You’re the pretty one and you don’t need an education. All you need is to marry a rich man and buy me a yellow house.” These words, spoken to her by her mother, derailed her life. However, throughout the years Kirby has used her writing skills to help her bridge the slender line between being a victim to becoming a survivor. “Everyone has the ability to transcend and overcome. I believe this to be true. I have wings of steel and would never have felt this powerful had it not been for all the things I had to overcome.” In this book of essays Kirby Sommers shares stories that shaped her slender margin of survival.
